New Initiatives for Urban Wildlife Awareness in Punjab: A Harmonious Blend of Education and Music

By Navdeep Sood, IUCN CEM Member, on 05 March 2024.

An initiative aimed at raising awareness about urban wildlife, A seminar was arranged for senior secondary girl students to celebrate World Nature Conservation Day, focusing on Human-Urban Wildlife Interactions—an often overlooked but crucial aspect of biodiversity, which is least expected in agrarian states, to highlight the importance of wildlife conservation. Punjab, known more for its agriculture, now recognises the value of preserving wildlife even in its growing urban landscapes. The seminar aimed to educate young minds about the challenges faced by wildlife in urban settings, the need for harmonious coexistence, and how they can contribute to conservation efforts. To make the experience more impactful, a unique addition followed the technical discussions—music. The seminar concluded with a soulful musical performance by Shaurya and Jigyasa, who conveyed powerful messages about conservation through their melodies, emphasising that conservation is not just about facts but also about connecting with nature emotionally.

This was not the first time music and awareness were blended to enhance the impact. On 2nd February 2024, at Harike Wetland, a Ramsar Site, another awareness intense eco-talks and musical program was held with Bhoomitra Beda Yatra, INTACH, PAC and several other reputed NGOs, volunteers and enthusiasts along with special attendee French musician Niccolo Vacchi. His performance highlighted the global need for wetland conservation and was successful. It was ensured not to pollute or disturb the sensitive place.

These initiatives represent a new and innovative approach in Punjab, where technical seminars are now paired with musical performances by young talents, creating a lasting impression on participants and fostering a deeper emotional connection with wildlife conservation. Through these efforts, Punjab is paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future, showing that wildlife protection can thrive even in unexpected places. We plan to conduct several more voluntary awareness campaigns in institutes.
